JAL DHARO – JAL BHARO – Harvesting of Rain Water

Preserving precious water resources by large scale harvesting of rain water as well as arresting runoff of surface water to improve and availability of precious water resources through the construction and management of Minor Irrigation structures.


It is a campaign of the West Bengal government to conserve rain water by creation of different type of water bodies throughout the state for sustainable development. It is a combined effort of various programs and projects of the government.

Western lateritic, Costal Saline and Northern Hill zones are the key target areas.

Jalatirtha, MGNREGA, Matir shristi, WBADMIP, RIDF and Core Sector etc are the program/ projects taken up by the government for creation of the water bodies.

WRI&DD is the Nodal department. Panchayat and Rural Development is the key contributor for creating large number of water detention structures and farm ponds under NREGA program.

Agriculture, Horticulture and Fishery Department create livelihood opportunities around these water bodies for better utilization of available water and improving income of the farmers.
