There are two Directorates under the administrative control of this Department. (1) Directorate of Mass Education Extension and (2) Directorate of Library Services. Besides, West Bengal State Literacy Mission Authority (WBSLA), functions under the overall administrative control of the Department.
An Act to provide for the establishment of public libraries in the State of West Bengal and to regulate, guide [control and supervise the libraries] as also to provide for a comprehensive rural and urban [library and information service] in the State of West Bengal.
Member means the Member of a sponsored public library and includes a Neo-literate Member, a Physically Handicapped Member and an Institutional Member of any District Library.
