“On Tuesday(4 days back) in Daspur in West Midnapore district which is some 100 km far three women were branded as witches and lynched by villagers. According to the police, the problem started form Tuesday night, when the villagers of tribal-dominated Dubrajpur Village in Daspur identified three women – Phulmani Singh, her daughter Sombari alias Titli and her daughter-in-law Risha – as witches and asked them to leave the village. Police told that following their refusal to leave, a kangaroo court held them responsible for bringing in bad luck and misery to the village. The court declared them as witches and ordered they be lynched for the safety of the village. The police have arrested seven people so far for this incident.” The above news which came to me through one of the medias shook me badly. Are we so superstitious in this 21st century? It speaks of a complete jungle raj and failure on the part of the police in collection of intelligence.Maheshweta Devi had condemned the attack and lynching but she is perhaps one amongst them who brought bad omen and ill luck upon the entire State. I am not a political person and I am seeeing purely the entire matter from judicious point of view. I appeal to all members to opine whether the act of the villagers of our State who were killer can be justified on any ground. It is another KHAP panchayat which held kangaroo trials like Maoists and lynched them. The women members of our forum should raise their voice and debate over the issue. We are here to help the helpless and educate plus also learn from the members. There are 3 lessons to learn from a pencil 1.Every thing we do leaves a mark,2.Pain always sharpens our strength and 3.important is that what is inside us, not outside. Als there was not a single person with wisdom in that village to combat the illeterates because I feel that the most illeterate amongs them will either be in Assembly or Parliament. The latest english for a crowd or hordes of animals with regards to baboons has been invented as a parliament of baboons and not a group or crowd or hordes or shole of baboons.

As far as I remember similar reports fed from Puruliya district also in different times in the past, showing backwardness of the society. We have seen sometimes children are also offered to the Goddess Kali! About 2 years ago, similar news was poured from Kalyani which is about 50 km from Kolkata! A man was also offered to Kali in Tarapith about 3 years back! Such ghastly incidents do not always account for prevalence of illiteracy in the society but, they are oftentimes consequences of some deep rooted conspiracies in the interest of some sections of the society. What about Roop Kanwar of Rajasthan – the so called Sati! Crime channels sometimes expose such events and try to bring out the original truth.
It’s not only the responsibilities of the Parliament/ Legislative Assembly or the Govt. but also the consciousness of the common non-political members of the society, who are engaged in diverse professions like teaching, medical science, scientific, administration, engineering, legal, business etc. All can do a good piece of social work to heal up social malady. It’s not an appreciable approach to become happy with mud-slinging to each other. No one can deny his role in mass awareness and mending the society. -
