It is now not at all essential to qualify NET/SET for pursuing Ph.D. research. As per present norms the aspirant who does not possess NET/SET qualification is required to pass a test conducted by the concerned university. All the aspirants who have qualified either NET/SET or university test (in lieu of NET/SET) are to undergo a course work of short duration in the university before commencement Ph.D. research.

At that time if you are qualified NET for fellowship then you will get fellowship from CSIR/UGC othewise if you qualified NET only for lecturership then you will get no fellowship for doing ph.d. But in my case, I first qualified GATE, then I applied in J.U. in response to an advertisement for doing Ph.D. financially sponsored by State govt. fellowship. In that case an interview was held among the candidates as there was a limited number of seats. After joining the said post, I qualified NET later. It was the process. I do not know the present process.

You initially were not a recipient of UGC/CSIR fellowship as you qualified GATE and not NET (for JRF scheme). As a GATE qualified fellow you started getting fellowship from the state-sponsored project run by your research guide. GATE is for doing M.Tech. study followed by doctoral research. It is a common practice that the supervisors allow GATE qualified candidates for doing Ph.D. research in their projects because of nonavailability of NET qualified candidates. NET candidates are not dependent on the guide’s project as they get fellowship and contingent money from UGC/CSIR for doing research on their own projects under the guidance of a Professor.
April 5, 2013 at 2:07 pm #77640AnonymousInactiveIn no case a teacher of any govt./ aided school can get any study leave for pursuing his/her Ph.D. degree. As per present circular for pursuing Ph. D. degree, one must go through the course work of 4/6 months, for which also a teacher won’t get any leave. He/She has to do it by taking his/her own leave either casual or commuted. A person can also pursue the same by taking without pay leave for the required period as per rules.
but is there any rule where the MC cannot deny giving permission from pursuing Ph.D?
April 8, 2013 at 6:41 pm #77693AnonymousInactiveSince it is related to incremental benefit, M.C. is supposed to allow him for doing Ph.D. research. However, pursuance of the course should not hamper academic interest of the school.
