Wages of Tea Garden Workers after Demonetisation

District Magistrates of all the Tea growing Districts of West Bengal are hereby authorised to accept deposit of money by the tea garden owners.

Sub: Transfer of fund into Government accounts for facilitating payment of wages in tea gardens of the State.

In view of the problem being faced by the tea garden owners of the State in making payment of wages to the tea workers employed in the tea gardens due to demonetisation of Rs. 500/- and Rs. 1,000/- notes by the Government of India, the District Magistrates of all the Tea growing Districts of West Bengal are hereby authorised to accept deposit of money by the tea garden owners in any existing bank account of the District Administration. The tea garden owners will transfer the amount to be paid as wages in the said Bank Account of the District Magistrate only by cheque or by direct electronic transfer from their bank accounts. The District Magistrate shall draw the amount and disburse the same to the tea garden owners on proper receipt to facilitate payment of wages to the tea garden workers.

This authorisation is given on the basis of the Reserve Bank of India letter No. RBI/2016-17/124/DCM (Plg) No. 1256/10.27.00/2016-17 dated 11.11.2016 whereby Government Departments have been allowed to draw cash beyond the stipulated limit of Rs. 10,000/- in exceptional cases.
